“I'll do it tomorrow” “when I get round to it”‘ ” when I have more time”

How many times have you heard yourself say if only there were more hours in the day?

How many times have you wished you could do something but just not had the time?

How many of you have bucket lists of things you will probably never get to do before you retire?

We could all do with more time, the problem is you will never have more unless you make more!

Well, guess what! You can make more time! Read on to find out how!

I can guarantee you won't get to a grand old age and wish you'd done more housework, watched more TV or spent more hours at work! But sadly you may regret all of those things you always dreamed of doing but just never got around to!

So we are going to show you how to have more time and live your dreams now.

It's quite simple really, stop spending time doing things you don't' need to be doing and have more time to do the things you want to do!

We are a busy family, Glen works full-time Monday to Friday including an hour commute each day whilst I have the pleasure of looking after our 2 children Benjamin and Annabelle, do my (non) housewifely duties and develop our online business.

We spend our weekends doing what we love, spending quality time together out and about adventuring and exploring our wonderful world.

So how do we make our busy lives work so that we can maximise our time and live life to the fullest? and more importantly, how can you do it too?

Well you need to be organised and have a routine that works for your family, creating a schedule will help you with that, but here are my top 10 tips to making more time!

1. Get more energy

This is probably the most important. Everything will take more effort if you aren't fuelling your body with what it needs to give it the energy it needs to function. You will function much more efficiently and be more focused on tasks allowing you to do them better and quicker.

You will get more done in a shorter space of time as you won't feel like you are lugging a dead weight around with you, plus you will feel happier and healthier making you more positive and productive.

Here's 3 simple ways to get more energy quickly:

1. Drink plenty of water. Your body needs water to do all of its really important jobs that help you function so help it out by giving it more! Aim for 1 glass as soon as you wake up, another within the first hour of waking, another before mid-morning, one before lunch, one before tea and one about 2 hours before bedtime.

2. Eat a healthy balanced diet free from junk foods and especially the big energy zapper…. sugar! Our body's are really clever but there are some nutrients it can't make itself, that's why we need to help it out by feeding it, your body doesn't need any junk food, in fact feeding it junk will slow it down and reduce its ability to function, it needs good clean wholesome foods to work to the best of its ability.

3. Get enough sleep! I'm sure we've all experienced the brain fog that comes with not enough sleep, your brain doesn't work properly, you can't concentrate, can't work efficiently and the smallest thing seems like the hardest thing in the world and takes forever to do!

Here's 5 tips to better sleep:

1. Turn all screens off one hour before bedtime (or get those funky yellow glasses if you must take your IPad to bed!)

2. Have a wind-down routine where you switch off from the day and relax your mind ready for sleep, read a fiction book, meditate, take a bath, whatever relaxes you.

3. Keep your bedroom clutter free, a comfortable temperature and dark.

4. Invest in a good quality mattress and pillow – you spend 1/3 of your life in bed, trust me it's a worthy investment to ensure the other 2/3 are as awesome as possible.

5. Go to bed before 11pm, after this time your body gets its second wind and it can be very difficult to switch off and sleep.   

2. Prepare healthy meals in advance

It's easy to reach for the convenience foods and sandwiches when you're busy and tired, but this could be making you more tired, by planning meals and preparing them in advance you will save time through the week when it comes to cooking and also ensure you always have healthy nutritious food when you are hungry.

For us breakfast is Butter Coffee OR Smoothies, Lunches are salads, homemade pre-cooked frozen meals or soup. Evening meal is a slow cooker meal that has been pre-prepped or meat or fish and vegetables that are easy to put in the oven.

I love my slow cooker, I pop all the prepped ingredients in a bag and freeze it then simply get it out the night before to defrost, throw into the slow cooker in the morning and bish bash bosh there a healthy meal for tea that you haven't had to slave over all day!

3. Get your food shopping delivered

After a trip to Tesco when Benjamin was a baby wandering around the masses of food singing old MacDonald repeatedly to him whilst trying to find chic peas, tahini and flax seed! I thought surely there must be an easier solution! It took over an hour to get 2 bags of shopping!  It turns out there is! I have since discovered the joys of food shopping online, there is no going back! It's so simple, everything is in categories or you can type individual items in the search bar it is so much easier than having to wander round the shop trying to find someone free to help you find an item who inevitably will not be in that department and will then have to go and find someone who has no idea and has a good look but you still end up empty handed!  

4. Clean as you go

Make sure all of the family (including small children) know that if they make a mess they clean it up. Wipe surfaces, sinks, showers, baths and toilets straight away, tidy anything you have been using as soon as you finish with it. If you always leave everywhere exactly as you found it and you will never be faced with a huge mess!

NB: Since Annabelle was born I also have a cleaner for a couple of hours once a fortnight which absolutely gives me more time!

5. Multi-task.

Normally I don't encourage multi-tasking, I think it's always best to be mindful and focussed on what you are doing, but there are some simple tasks that you can apply this too. While the kettle's boiling and the tea is brewing clean windowsills, water plants, clean cupboard fronts, do pelvic floor exercises, you'd be amazed at what you can achieve in the time it takes to make a cuppa!

6. Evening whirlwind

I have a 10-20 minute whirlwind every evening where I empty bins, put recycling out, empty the dishwasher, put clothes away, straighten cushions, etc etc (Glen calls this faffing time) I leave everything how I want to wake up and see it in the morning, binning yesterday's junk and putting the day to bed so we can wake up to a clutter free fresh new day.

7.Turn off the TV

We very rarely watch TV but there are some programmes (Goggle Box/First Dates/Hunted) that we love to unwind and have a chuckle too. We also enjoy watching documentaries. The great thing about having catch up TV there is no need to have the TV on, you can just watch the things you want when you have some free time. If you turn the TV on without a purpose you will end up watching things for the sake of it or spending more of your precious free time flicking through thousands of channels and films trying to find something to watch and inevitably end up watching something you could quite easily have survived without!

8. Delete your Facebook app

How many times a day do you find yourself aimlessly scrolling through your news feed to see people whining about life (like not having enough time, sleep, energy, and here's a tip if you are one of these people, stop spending your life on Facebook! You will have more of all of the above instantly!)' or telling you what they're having for tea, or what the weather's like! You do not need to know this information, it won't enrich your life and you are wasting time that could be spent doing things you love doing! It's easy to go into the social media trance where you become oblivious to all around you as you turn into a social media zombie! scroll like, share, comment, like, like, like! Repeat 30 minutes later! Honestly, I think there should be an app to time how long you spend on Facebook, the results would be quite scary for some people! Do yourself a favour, delete the App and give yourself specific times to log on and catch up with the world (when using the little boy's/girl's room is a good time, to implement number 5 you can multi-task!)

9. Plan your time off

Plan your evenings, weekends and holidays in advance, find out what's on, how to get there, prepare everything you need to take the night before then wake up and go! The last thing you want to do is to waste your precious time trying to decide where to go and spending half of your day off trying to decide what to do and where to go!

10. Make use of bank holidays

Book annual leave around bank holidays and turn long weekends into even longer weekends. This will give you more time to explore further


Life is short and time flies by in the blink of an eye so don't waste it, get more energy and make the most of it!
