How to use Performance Management for Love, Laughter and Adventure.
Anyone who knows me I am not much of a reader of novels or non-fiction books but get great pleasure from text I can learn something from, including biographies.
What 50 Shades of Grey was a story and not a biography?? Sorry maybe more on that book later!
So moving quickly on, life is like business it needs direction, as Professor Jim Collins discovered in his research Built to Last Successful Habits of Visionary Companies one of the keys is Big Hairy Audacious Goals.
This is not the what is the meaning of life question but more what do you want out of life. Sometimes you need to stop and take stock, in business carry out a review.
Have you ever carried out a review of your life, what questions did you ask yourself let is know in the comments, please?
When I am old and smelling of wee I want to be able to look back and smile at the memories of all the things I have done.
Oh and race Gemma round the care home on a space hopper.
So we are not planning on waiting till retirement to live, we are alive now, we are fit (ish).
Getting started is the hard part, just like starting a new fitness routine you have to work at it and keep on track.
A way to see if you like something is to use the approach Professor Jim Collins found in his research Great by Choice. Great companies first fired bullets to get on target before firing big cannon balls.
You might want to try something new, like scuba diving before you go off and buy all the kit try a taster session. We did this with dry stone walling, it looked interesting and wanted to try it so we did a weekend introduction to dry stone walling course with the South Yorkshire http://www.dswa-sy.org.uk/Home.php branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association. Over the weekend a team of use build a piece of wall. A great sense of achievement, gave us a great insight and it will be there for years to come.
Back to the business books, most use performance information to help understand what is going on, please do not misinterpret this as deciding what to do.
Second professor of the post is Professor Donald Wheeler, he talks about using Statistical Process Control Charts as the voice of the process. These charts help you understand noise from signals.
Now noise is just interference, those things in life which are present but have no bearing on you or your life. Were as a signal is something you need to take note of and consider action.
So what is real life noise?
A big one for a lot of people is listening to the negative things what other people think of you. Take away the positive but ditch the people who only say negative things.
Spending time worrying what other people think will get in your way of seeing the signals of life, those important things.
You could also be creating your own noise to avoid doing something, the I don't syndrome. I don't have enough money, I don't have enough time, I don't think I am clever enough.
A friend once said to me it is better looking back saying I tried something to looking back and wishing you did try.
Simple signals, days off from work, they are important not for going shopping, unless that is your thing. But for recharging your batteries, having fun may be an adventure, seeing places or simply getting in some fresh air.
So what are the key actionable points:
- Set some goals in life
- Try simple things such as a small sushi pack, short hike
- Find what you like then go large, walking weekend cook a full Indian meal
- Identify noise in your life such as people who gossip and avoid them
- Spot the signals, the opportunities to fire bullets once ranged in cannon balls.
